Frequently asked questions

Someone has just died. What do I do first?

Take a breath, call a loved one and know that you’re not alone. When you’re ready, you’ll need to notify their doctor to issue a cause of death certificate and contact a funeral director to arrange for your loved one to be transferred into their care until the funeral. See the checklist in the link below to learn what to do next.

What to do when someone dies

How do I begin planning a funeral?

Your funeral director will step you through the process at a pace you’re comfortable with. The main planning phase begins at the first meeting, where you’ll make some key decisions, including the location and date of the funeral. As a starting point, download our free funeral planning guide.

I’m not sure of my loved one’s wishes. Can you help?

Our experienced team will help you make thoughtful, practical decisions, even if you’re not entirely sure of your loved one’s wishes. We’ll explain the various options, such as burial vs cremation, coffin or casket, and holding a viewing or not.

What should I bring to my first meeting with a funeral director?

It’s a good idea to bring a close friend or family member for support. If you can, try to bring along your loved one’s birth certificate, any documentation of their wishes including prepaid funeral plans, a recent photo of them and the clothes you’d like them to be dressed in.
